While testing performance of web applications we would want to verify the pages are functioning as expected. But sometimes the page is too huge for the jmeter test client to download, or some times you are not concerned about the contents of the response page, rather you just want to make sure the page is delivered, i.e. there are no 404 or 500′s , but the response code is 200 OK, or redirect 302 , which ever is expected in your test scenario.

solution :

In the Response Assertion you should select “Response Code” rather than the default response, and add 200|302 if you are expecting redirect or 200 if you want to test if the page is being delivered without at issues.

its a pain to type ps -ef | grep java and read through the pile of information spitted out by the command, instead just use “jps” if you are looking for a java application / calss.

please note : this is not yet supported on Wiondows – for detaile look at sun’s ( now oracle) documentation .

Thread dump is a essential part of debugging issues with running process apart from looking at the logs, thread dumps provide a “under the hood” view of your java process and its health.

kill -3 or kill -QUIT are usually used to take thread dumps in most UNIX environments, but there is catch for java process which was kicked off by a shell-script.

This blog post explains this in great detail and is a good read if you are stuck trying to take a thread dump on a java process started by a shell script -

reference – http://www.jguru.com/faq/view.jsp?EID=206736

A RequestDispatcher object can forward a client’s request to a resource or include the resource itself in the response back to the client. A resource can be another servlet, or an HTML file, or a JSP file, etc.

You can also think of a RequestDispatcher object as a wrapper for the resource located at a given path that is supplied as an argument to the getRequestDispatcher method.

For constructing a RequestDispatcher object, you can use either the ServletRequest.getRequestDispatcher() method or the ServletContext.getRequestDispatcher() method. They both do the same thing, but impose slightly different constraints on the argument path. For the former, it looks for the resource in the same webapp to which the invoking servlet belongs and the pathname specified can be relative to invoking servlet. For the latter, the pathname must begin with ‘/’ and is interpreted relative to the root of the webapp.

To illustrate, suppose you want Servlet_A to invoke Servlet_B. If they are both in the same directory, you could accomplish this by incorporating the following code fragment in either the service method or the doGet method of Servlet_A:

 RequestDispatcher dispatcher = getRequestDispatcher("Servlet_B");
 dispatcher.forward( request, response );

where request, of type HttpServletRequest, is the first parameter of the enclosing service method (or the doGet method) and response, of type HttpServletResponse, the second. You could accomplish the same by

 RequestDispatcher dispatcher=getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher( "/servlet/Servlet_B" );
 dispatcher.forward( request, response );

Jmeter is very useful for testing web pages, as it helps us scrape a web page and grab stuffs you want in the web page to be used somewhere else in the script.

Classic example is when you want to grab a token, or a URL which you would like to call after you call the main page for instance.

My favourate way to do this is by using the Regular Expression Post processor, which allows me to provide a regular expression with the following options

1. Reference Name : This will be the name of the variable where the value extracted form the web page based on the regular expression will be stored and can be referenced elsewhere in the script

2. Regular Expression : this is the regular expression for the line to be matched

3. Template : The format to be specified is $<group_number>$ , which specifies which group will be picked up and stored in the reference name/variable. The grouping is similar to the one in Java Regular Expression, – example : $2$ would result in the second of the groups to be picked up form a regular exmpression – (.*)details=(.*)src=(.*) , which is the value of what ever follows “details=” in the regular expression

4. Match No ( 0 for Random) : 1 would specify the first occurance of a line that matches the regular expression

5. Default Value :

Now once you have a Reference name of a variable , you would use it in the following way

1. You can refer to it form other “SAMPLERS” by using the following format ${REF_NAME}

2. Assign it to a String variable in “BEAN SHELL” – String x = vars.get(“REF_NAME”);

Now if you would like to re-assign value for the REFFRENCE NAME after modification in Bean Shell, you would do it as follow

vars.put(“REF_NAME”,”some_value”);

Query String are very common among web applications, i have used it very often with JSP and Servlets. I have not used query Strings with Java Script, This article describes it well.

Example Below –

– Java Script

In short use this function to grab the query string -

function getQuerystring(key, default_)
{
if (default_==null) default_=”";
key = key.replace(/[\[]/,”\\\[").replace(/[\]]/,”\\\]”);
var regex = new RegExp(“[\\?&]“+key+”=([^&#]*)”);
var qs = regex.exec(window.location.href);
if(qs == null)
return default_;
else
return qs[1];
}

The getQuerystring function is simple to use. Let’s say you have the following URL:

http://www.bloggingdeveloper.com?author=bloggingdeveloper

and you want to get the “author” querystring’s value:

var author_value = getQuerystring(‘author’);

Escaping %20 ( for space) or %40 (for @ ) from query String

Lets take a look at the method getQuerystring again. Here is the “step by step” explanation of the method

key = key.replace(/[\[]/,”\\\[").replace(/[\]]/,”\\\]”);
var regex = new RegExp(“[\\?&]“+key+”=([^&#]*)”);

The above lines prepares the regular expression that will be applied on the url gathered in the next line of code.

var qs = regex.exec(window.location.href);

Javascript location href property of DOM window object allows you to get or set the current URL. You can access the href property through location.href or window.location.href. Both methods will return the same result. If you are trying to assign the value retrieved from the Javascript location href to a variable or alert message box then it will return the current URL of the browser. And if you are trying to assign the value to the Javascript location href property then it will redirect the current URL to the specified location URL. more here

Some times though,you would want to escape the query string fillers and revert it back to original value ( ex : %20 to space ). If you want to achieve this, you need to add this line to the method which escapes the fillers and reverts the original query string values ( for example Java%20World to Java World )

var qs = regex.exec( unescape(window.location.href) );

JSP -

URl: http://myaddress.com/xyz?name=jill
String someName = request.getParameter(“name”) ;
